VetStrong is a nonprofit organization that supports and provides household goods and furnishings to recently rehoused homeless Veterans. VetStrong started off with a pick-up truck and a few Veteran volunteers in 2017, but has grown into a community that helps over 200 Veteran and their families households a year in San Antonio.
Our Mission & Values
Mission: VetStrong is a San Antonio based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting recently homeless Veterans and their families by providing home furnishings to those in need.
Values: At VetStrong we believe in the equity of service to others. Through compassion, empathy and community, we provide basic essentials to Veterans in need, giving back to those who sacrificed so much through their military service to our country.
“At some point, we all need a hand up or someone just to listen. The sense of satisfaction one gets from selfless acts of service is immeasurable. I hope that my example motivates other Veterans to engage in our community to become that agent of change,” James Pobanz.
Founder and CEO,
James Pobanz, served in the U.S. Army for 17 years, with four overseas deployments to Kosovo, Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. After serving in the Army, James moved to San Antonio to be closer to family. He enrolled at The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2013 to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Multidisciplinary Studies and later pursued his Masters in Social Work.
While in school James also made time to serve his community. He became involved in Veteran nonprofit services including the American GI Forum, Wounded Warrior Project, was a fellow in the Veterans in the Global Leadership program and continues to work closely with all levels of government to help those in need.
Through these experiences, James identified a need not being met in the local Veteran community. One of the most pressing needs was providing donated furniture to recently rehoused homeless Veterans.
In 2017, James and other volunteer Veterans loaded a pick-up truck and started to aid their community. That is when James started VetStrong. Today, you will find James out every weekend loading trucks of furniture and home goods to Veterans.
